The Black Art Today Foundation in partnership with Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman presents: “And Still We Rise” Cover Art: Standing With Those Before Me by Marilyn Gates-Davis. As part of the Comptroller’s Art in Treasured Spaces Program, this powerful exhibition explores the transformative power of the BIPOC experience in America. Drawing inspiration from the Juneteenth legacy, it is an exploration of how historical trauma is distilled into triumph.
“You may write me down in history / With your bitter, twisted lies, / You may trod me in the very dirt / But still, like dust, I’ll rise.” — Maya Angelou
To celebrate Juneteenth within the Maryland Treasury Building is a profound act of reclamation. “And Still We Rise” is a visual symphony navigating three temporal pillars: The Root, The Reach, and The Horizon, bridging the archives of the past with visions of an equitable American future.
We invite you to witness a plurality of legacies that refuse to be diminished. We have risen. We are rising. And still, we rise.
