Born in Kilmarnock, Virginia, Mrs. Susan T. King transformed a life of service into an enduring legacy. A World War II aircraft riveter, educator, Congressional Gold Medal recipient, and proud HBCU graduate, she has inspired generations through her resilience, leadership, and commitment to community. This exhibition honors a remarkable woman whose story continues to shape history as we celebrate her at 102.
As part of the Comptroller’s Art in Treasured Spaces Program, this powerful exhibition explores the transformative power of the BIPOC experience in America. Drawing inspiration from the Juneteenth legacy, it is an exploration of how historical trauma is distilled into triumph. To celebrate Juneteenth within the Maryland Treasury Building is a profound act of reclamation. “And Still We Rise” is a visual symphony navigating three temporal pillars: The Root, The Reach, and The Horizon, bridging the archives of the past with visions of an equitable American future.

To transition is to exist in the liminal—the threshold where the old self sheds and the new self takes root. As we move from the awakening rains of May to the high-noon heat of July, Transitions invites viewers to pause in the middle of the journey. In this collection, the artists utilize various media to interrogate what it means to “cross over.” For the BIPOC creator, transition is often a multidimensional act: it is the migration across borders, the shifting between cultural codes, and the radical evolution of healing from the past to bloom in the present.
Ascension is a celebration of resilience, transformation, and the power of overcoming limitation. Featuring the works of BIOPIC artists, the exhibition explores journeys of personal growth, cultural impact, and enduring legacy through powerful visual storytelling. Through diverse artistic expression, Ascension invites viewers to reflect on perseverance, self-discovery, and the beauty of rising beyond adversity in pursuit of greatness.

Fifty years after Roots reshaped the cultural memory of the Black diaspora, Bloodlines & Brushstrokes emerges as a visual continuation of that legacy. Created for the Exploring Kunta: Roots 50th Commemorative Experience, this virtual exhibition and auction serves as a digital sanctuary exploring lineage, memory, and identity. Mirroring the journey from Annapolis to Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania, the featured works trace movement through history, spirit, and inheritance.
